My Favorite Things about Wisconsin
The holidays are upon us and my house full of Christmas cheer. Our tree is up and the lights are up and shining brightly each night. Christmas cards are arriving daily our home is filled with all the sweet smells of baked goods that only show up this time of year. But my favorite part of this time of year is listening to my daughters’ practice for their piano recital. One of my daughters is going to play in her first recital and has chosen to play, “Away in the Manger” and my other daughter is playing the classic song “My Favorite Things” from “The Sound of Music” It seems fitting for me to talk about some of my favorite things that I love about Wisconsin.
I’ve mentioned a few times that I love that Wisconsin has four seasons. We are fortunate enough to be able to experience each season as it should be. Even though at times it feels like winter takes up nine of those months.
Wisconsin’s state parks are amazing. Because they are located throughout the state, getting to one is pretty easy. They are well maintained and everyone is pretty friendly. They’re also great to visit anytime of the year.
Festivals and fairs are a way of life during the summer. Whether your going to Summer Fest or attending one of the many county fairs throughout the state. I never get enough of seeing 4H projects, tractor pulls and eating all that delicious fair food.
Let’s talk about Wisconsin’s landscape. Wisconsin has some pretty diverse landscapes. Think about it, we’ve got beaches to swim from. More lakes than our neighbors to the west. The beautiful bluffs along the Mississippi River. The more than 1.5 million acres of the Chequamegon National Forest, all the different waterfalls and you can’t forget Wisconsin Dells. Wisconsin has a landscape for whatever mood activity or adventure that you’re up for doing.
We make winter fun. Just because there’s two feet of snow on the ground and it’s so cold that water freezes as you throw it up in the air, doesn’t mean you stay inside and hibernate. We Wisconsinites find ways to make the most of our situation and have fun. We ski, snowshoe, snowmobile and even cut holes in lakes and jump in them for charities. We know how to get outside and have fun in the winter.
Wisconsin is rich with traditions. We honor our past with these traditions and pass them on to our future generations. Whether it’s a family recipe, showing cattle at your local fair or taking a camping trip to the same spot each year. I love that Wisconsinites honor those traditions. We are reminding of a lot of those traditions around this time of year, but they really take place all year long.
Perhaps my favorite thing about Wisconsin is the people. Each time I visit a state park, I’m always so proud of the way people treat each other. We’re friendly and polite. It’s something that I really appreciate when my kids need to go a little slower on trail or just need to stop and take a break. I think there’s something about us all just trying to get outside and make the most of our outdoor time that really brings out the best in us. I know that kindness and friendliness go a long way to promote the great state we all live in.
These are just a few of my favorite things and there’s a lot that I love about Wisconsin and living in Wisconsin. I was born and raised here and don’t plan on going anywhere. There are things I have yet to experience and I want to share those experiences with you.
Now it’s your turn. I want to know what are some of your favorite things about Wisconsin. Leave a comment and let me and others know what you like most about our state.
