1 Year Outdoor Challenge with Keith Uhlig
Imagine challenging yourself to get outside every day for at least 15 minutes. No matter if it's 90 degrees, raining, snowing or in the middle of a polar vortex. Could you do it? I’m not sure I could do it. I like staying inside on those extreme cold days and when it gets above 90 degrees, I don’t mind staying in and enjoying my air conditioner. But when you think about it, it’s only 15 minutes and how tough can it be?
I recently sat down with Keith Uhlig, from Wausau, who did just that. Keith started his 365 Day Outdoor Challenge on March 1st of 2018 I was able to sit down with him after the year was up. Keith did everything from running, biking, kayaking and ice skating. What started out as fulfilling a delayed News Year’s resolution turned out to be a form of therapy that came at just the right time in Keith’s life.
Keith shared most of his challenge with his dog Henry, who taught Keith about enjoying every moment, not matter what the weather was like. But the one thing that I got pretty quickly out of our interview was that Keith never look at this as a challenge. It was something that he enjoyed and looked forward to doing. He made the commitment and never looked back.
I hope you take some time and listen to Keith’s story on the podcast. I think after listening to him, you’ll be inspired. I know I was. What I got from Keith’s story is that it’s important to set aside a little time to get outdoors, even if it’s just to sit and listen to the bird sing their songs. I’m not saying you need to start a streak of getting out every day, but maybe start with once a week and see where it goes from there.
Taking a little time out of each day to get outdoors is good for the soul. It helps recharge your batteries, gets you centered and allows you to work through any of the things that may come along in your life. Listen to Keith’s story and I’m sure you’ll be inspired like I was to make more of an effort to get outside and enjoy everything that Wisconsin has to offer.
Keith has decided to keep his streak of getting outdoors everyday for at least 15 minutes and you can follow his journey on Instagram.
